Project Description:
Desert Grove Pools & Spas, in collaboration with Watercurl Pools LLC, successfully executed the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the complete MEP systems for the water feature at the iconic Natural History Museum on Yas Island. This landmark development, part of Abu Dhabi’s cultural and educational expansion strategy, demanded precision engineering, environmental innovation, and seamless architectural integration—all of which were delivered to the highest standards by Desert Grove.
Scope of Work
Our turnkey MEP package included:
- Complete hydraulic and mechanical filtration system design and execution
- Electrical cabling, controls, and automation for all water feature systems
- Plumbing, drainage, and water balancing systems
- Integration with landscape, structural, and BMS components
- Testing, commissioning, and technical handover to client and facility teams
Technical Highlights
Regenerative Media Filtration System
The water feature utilizes a regenerative filtration system known for its high water recovery rates and superior filtration quality. This system minimizes water loss during backwash cycles and reduces chemical dependency, offering a sustainable and cost-efficient alternative to traditional sand filters—an ideal solution for high-profile public installations.
Advanced UV Disinfection Technology
To ensure optimal water hygiene and safety, a state-of-the-art UV disinfection system was installed. This system operates continuously to neutralize bacteria and pathogens without the heavy use of chlorine, ensuring crystal-clear water with minimal environmental impact—essential for public-facing cultural institutions.
Smart MEP Engineering
High-efficiency circulation pumps with VFDs to optimize flow rates and reduce power consumption
Chemical dosing systems with precision sensors and automation for real-time water quality control
Submerged and dry-service pipework, fabricated using corrosion-resistant materials for longevity
Integrated control panels with PLC-based automation and SCADA/BMS interfacing
Full electrical infrastructure, including LV panels, grounding systems, and safety interlocks
Design Coordination & Execution Challenges
Working within a world-class museum development required exceptional coordination with multiple stakeholders—including landscape architects, structural engineers, civil contractors, and cultural consultants. The Desert Grove team maintained strict adherence to timelines, safety standards, and technical compliance requirements issued by authorities including Estidama, Abu Dhabi Municipality, and ADDC.
Key challenges included:
Routing complex piping systems within a densely landscaped and architecturally intricate site
Achieving silent operation and high water clarity under varying load conditions
Ensuring all mechanical rooms and access points were discreetly integrated without compromising aesthetics or accessibility
Project Outcome
The water feature at the Natural History Museum is now a fully operational, visually striking component of the museum experience—symbolizing the natural forces that shape our planet while embodying engineering innovation and environmental stewardship. Desert Grove Pools & Spas,in collaboration with Watercurl Pools LLC, is honored to have contributed to this iconic development on Yas Island, reinforcing our reputation as a trusted partner for complex, high-end water feature solutions in the UAE.
